Excel Learning Center
The premier tutoring center in Hawaii

Calvin Ishii is the Director of Excel Learning Center.

He was born in Tokyo, Japan. When he was 8 years old, his family moved to Hawaii with the desire for Calvin to enter the American education system. His interest in science began during his middle and high school years. He worked in the Biochemistry laboratory at the University of Hawaii and won the best of High School Award in Science Fair. Calvin scored in the 90 percentile on the SAT and decided on the University of California at Berkeley to pursue his interest in science, especially in the field of Photosynthesis.

At Berkeley, Calvin worked with Nobel Laureate, Professor Melvin Calvin and continued on to graduate school, majoring in Biochemistry. He also scored in the 95 percentile on his GMATs and was accepted to the Haas Graduate School of Business and qualified as a Mensa (high IQ society) member. He was also a recipient of the American Heart Association Fellowship.

Calvin started tutoring students while in college and relentlessly studied different math methods including Mental Math, Singapore Math, Korean, Indian, Chinese Math, and the use of multi-sensory approaches to make math fun and easy to understand. He has over 15 years of extensive test preparation and math teaching experience in the SSAT Middle & Upper level, SAT, SAT II, ACT, GRE, and GMAT tests. He has also helped many students prepare for Johns Hopkins University Talented Youth Program, Math team, Math/Science AP courses, and professional placement tests.

For the past 15 years, Calvin has been teaching high school Math and Science subjects.  He is specialized in SAT and SSAT Math, making these test areas easier for students to understand.  Not only does he lead the Excel teaching team, he personally teaches students test-taking skills and tricks to raise test scores.  He has a solid track record of helping students get into top private schools, including Punahou, Iolani, Kamehameha, and many other private schools on the island.  Targeting SAT Math, he helps students score in their desired range and get into colleges of their choice.

Calvin is a certified educational consultant and only professional member of the Indepedent Educational Counselor Association (IECA) in the state of Hawaii.

Our center also has many visiting instructors who are faculty from the U.S. mainland that joined our teaching team.
